Chapter 2 – Divorce Letter

    “Yuxiang, go to the house and ask your brother to come out. Write a letter of resignation for this slut and find someone to go to Wangjia Village to find this slut’s family and bring her back. Our Xie family doesn’t want this kind of shameless woman in our family!”

    Widow Xie said. She glanced at Wang Xiushu who was lying at her feet, disgusted and contemptuous, “This kind of unruly lady belongs in a pig cage. Because Xie Zurong will be a high official in the future, I’ll let you off and get your maternal family to come and bring you back.”

     Widow Xie’s expressions were all arrogant like Xie Zurong had already become a high-ranking official.

    “I’m not leaving! Call Xie Zurong out here. I want to see him!”

    Wang Xiushu was stimulated by the words of Xie Yuxiang and Widow Xie. The light in her eyes suddenly lit up after extinguishing, but it was very strange, “I want to see Xie Zurong and his so-called college classmate. I did not do that sort of thing and I won’t admit that I did something I didn’t do!”

    “You bitch! How dare you say that you didn’t sleep with another man!”

    Widow Xie saw that Wang Xiushu, who had never dared to make such a rebellion in the past, was so angry that she raised her foot and kicked Wang Xiushu. She stretched out her hand and jerked Wang Xiushu’s thin clothes.

    “Everyone has already seen what a nasty thing she is. Aiyo, my family Zu Rong only came back this afternoon, and then he had been in the hall to accompany the guests. He didn’t even enter your room. How dare you say that you didn’t have an affair?”

    Wang Xiushu’s clothes were already thin, and she was caught off guard by Widow Xie who pulled her clothes off, revealing her white shoulders.

    Today, the widow Xie was determined to kick Wang Xiushu out of Xie’s house, but she didn’t care how it sounded. This scolding was really hard to listen to, not to mention that the women nearby her were blushing. Even the men who utter a lot of bad words on weekdays feel unbearable and ashamed.

    “I have been wronged!”

    Wang Xiushu also knows that Widow Xie must have been determined to kick her out of the house today. Otherwise, how could she be so unrelenting, crying, and laughing now! She was praying to see Xie Zurong, but today even if she killed herself, she wouldn’t be able to clear her name as a slut who slept with another man in the house in broad daylight.    

    “All of you people here have seen all that I’ve done for the Xie family, slaving away like a cow and a horse for so many years. Call Xie Zurong out. Let me have a word with him. If he still wants to have a divorce afterward, then let’s just divorce.”

    “Today even if I, Wang Xiushu am killed here, I don’t need to bother you guys to invite my parents here!”

    It has been more than five to six years since Wang Xiushu entered the family. Only this Wang Xiushu is the exception. Her stomach still hasn’t even moved. (She hasn’t been pregnant yet.) This matter has always been a knot in WIdow Xie’s heart. In the past, this matter has always been a problem for Wang Xiushu.

    “Mother, it’s fortunate that this slut didn’t give my brother a child. Otherwise, my brother might’ve ended up raising someone else’s child!” Xie Yuxiang has always looked down on Wang Xiushu, and has treated Wang Xiushu as a slave for so many years. Let’s not talk about respect, but because of Wang Xiushu’s tolerance, she became more and more fierce when bullying Wang Xiushu. Her eyes looked at Wang Xiushu with cold eyes. Her heart flashed with happiness when she saw Wang Xiushu in a difficult position and could not help but add more fuel to the fire.   

    When people nearby heard Widow Xie cruelly scold Wang Xiushu, they originally wanted to help Wang Xiushu and say a few words, but Wang Xiushu had been caught in an affair and they knew what kind of personality Widow Xie had so they just watched and listened to the mother and daughter, Widow Xie and Xie Yuxiang echoing each other and singing the same tune because it wasn’t good to speak up at this point. 

    If it was your own family’s daughter-in-law who was unable to get pregnant, most likely you would get your son to divorce her, not to mention the fact that Wang shi [1] had an affair. It was a matter of fact that Xie Zurong would divorce Wang shi, but hearing Xie Yuxiang, an unmarried girl, who opened her mouth and talked too much made feel people feel panicked and uncomfortable.

    Several older people looked at this scene and shook their heads secretly.

    “She’s just something that can’t even get pregnant. She can sleep with another man, but she can’t lay eggs [2]. Taking advantage of the fact that the uncles of the clan are all here today in front of me, I will take the initiative to divorce this hen who cannot lay eggs!

    “I can’t lay eggs, but you don’t even take a look at what a soft egg your son is.”

    Wang Xiushu was trying to force Xie Zurong to come out of the house. She could see hiding in the house and not coming out to see her. She was really determined to let the widow Xie make things difficult for herself. For so many years, the widow Xie nagged her about how she couldn’t get pregnant. Wang Xiushu was already patient for so many years. She was pushed to the limit. Her eyes became red. Since they were unkind, they couldn’t blame her for being unrighteous.

    “Wang, you shameless thing who can even do such dirty things!” Wang Xiushu was full of madness and was about to die when Xie Zurong, who had been hiding inside his house the whole time, suddenly rushed out and turned angrily at Wang Xiushu.

    “Today you shamelessly did such an unscrupulous thing. Just divorcing you is already being merciful. You are spouting nonsense! You have really made me upset. Today I have to call everyone to bring you to the yamen [3]. Let the prefect make an announcement so that everyone in the county knows that your Wang family raised a very good daughter. [4]

    “Yes, this woman who did this sort of things should be known to everyone. Let’s see how she can harm others in the future!”

    Xie Yuxiang saw that Xie Zurong did not give Wang Xiushu any face, and looked at Wang Xiushu like she was dirty but said to Xie Zurong, “Brother, please go and write the divorce letter. I will find someone to go to the Wang family’s house. If you go to tell them the news, who knows if anyone from the sick and disabled Wang family can even bring this bitch back. This situation is so embarrassing and loses so much face. I’m afraid that it’ll be hard to find someone to bring her back.”

    The disgust in Xie Yuxiang’s tone provoked Wang Xiushu. The eldest brother in the family injured his leg when he went hunting in the mountains a few years ago.  Because he had no money to invite a doctor to treat him, he fell ill. Now he suffered from inconvenience in his legs and feet, and he has become disabled. 

    Her parents worried so much that their hair became all white. In the past few years, the elderly father who spent the past few years has been rushing in the harvest quickly, and my mother has been very busy. The two elders have been exhausted during the past two years.

    This has always been a lump in Wang Xiushu’s heart. If it weren’t for her to marry Xie Zurong, her brother would not be disabled, and he wouldn’t be unmarried even after twenty-two years.

    If she hadn’t listened to Widow Xie’s words and left the money to Xie Zurong for his school tuitions but turned a blind eye when her family asked for money to invite the doctor to treat her brother’s injury, her parents would not be so exhausted.

    Wang Xiushu’s teeth could not stop grinding her teeth together in frustration and made a “ga zhi ga zhi” [5] sound. She fixedly looked at the Xie family. She abandoned her older brother and parents to serve this family like an ox and a horse[6] for five to six years.

    Her eyes were shining strangely. She needed to see how ugly the Xie family’s heart was.

Notes:

    [1] Wang shi- This is another title for Wang Xiushu, the daughter-in-law of Widow Xie and the wife of Xie Zurong. The shi part of Wang shi refers to how Wang Xiushu is from the Wang clan, meaning that her surname is Wang. Just know that Wang shi is referring to Wang Xiushu.

    [2] She can’t lay eggs- This refers to how she can’t get pregnant.

    [3] yamen-the government in feudal China

    [4] that your Wang family raised a very good daughter-He’s being sarcastic here, saying that the Wang family raised a daughter of this kind of quality who is able to cheat on her husband. 

    [5] ga zhi ga zhi-This is what the author used to express the sound of Wang Xiushu’s teeth grinding

    [6] Like a cow and a horse- This phrase has been used a couple times already. The direct translation would be “to work like an ox/cow and to work like a horse” while the figurative meaning is to work extremely hard.

I haven’t read the whole story yet so I don’t know if the book is good or not, but I’ll just read along the way as I translate the novel. I’m planning on translating about 10-15 chapters just to see how the novel is and to see the response.
